  • Applicants must be permanent residents of Canada.
  • Applicants must live in Canada for 3 years out of the last 5 years. You have at least 1095 days to live in Canada.
  • Applicants must file their taxes in the last 3 years.
  • Applicants must pass the Citizenship test.
  • Applicants must prove their language skills. You need CLB 4 or higher in IELTS & CELPIP.

The processing time for citizenship in Canada is 24 months. IRCC issued the electronic citizenship certificate online. They offered the e-certificate to those applicants who submitted their application before January 4, 2023.

The application fee for citizenship in Canada is $630 per applicant. If you are under 18, then the application fee is $100.

If you are born to Canadian parents and you are 18 or over, the application fee is $100 per applicant. If you want to get the proof of Citizenship certificate then the application fee is $75.

If you want to resume your Canadian Citizenship (18 and over) then the application fee is $530. If your age is under 18, the application fee is $100.

Citizenship Test & Interview

If you are applying for Canada Citizenship, then you have to go for a test and interview. The applicants who have 18 to 54 years of age, have to go for a test and interview.

If your age is over 55, then you don’t need to for the test but you have to go for an interview.

If your age is under 18, you don’t need to go test and interview. Sometimes interview depends upon IRCC officers. If IRCC has questions for you then they can set up the interview.

Basically, the citizenship test is about Canada’s history, geography, economy, laws, government, and symbols. There is a total of 20 questions in the test.

The test is 30 minutes long. The questions include multiple choice and true or false. You have to get 16 marks to pass this test. Usually, the test is in written form. But sometimes it may be oral.

It depends upon the citizenship official on the test day whether your test is oral or written. After the test, you will have an interview with the official.

During the interview:

  • They will give the results of your test.
  • They will check your language skills if your age is between 18 to 54 years.
  • They will verify your application and original documents.
  • They can ask you questions if they have any questions related to your applications.
  • They make sure that you meet all requirements for citizenship.

If you pass the test and interview, then on the same day they will you a ceremony date and time. You will also receive an email or letter about the oath ceremony date and time.

Taking the oath of Citizenship in Canada is the last of the Citizenship ceremony to become a Canadian Citizen.

Adults and children over the age of 14, can go to the citizenship ceremony and take the oath. Otherwise, parents will get certificates for children under the age of 14.

How long after the citizenship test is the oath ceremony in Canada

Mostly, the citizenship ceremony takes place within 6 months after you pass the citizenship test. Usually, it takes 4 to 6 months.

The citizenship officials send the invitation to the ceremony oath. The invitation to the ceremony will have the location for an in-person or zoom link (for a video oath ceremony).

Due to covid-19, most of the ceremony oath is done through zoom. If you are not available on the date of your ceremony then officials ask you to explain the reason why you did not come. If you have a valid reason, then you will get a new date.

Otherwise, officials stop processing your application and not grant your Citizenship.
